Gavin Wood

Capital and wealth path
- A computer-science doctorate and software career supplied technical capital
- Implemented the first functional Ethereum client, wrote the Yellow Paper, and served as early CTO
- Built company and token interests through Parity, Web3 Foundation, Polkadot/DOT, and later protocols
Asset and control boundaries
| Category | Finding | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum contribution | Technical co-founder status is clear, but he does not own Ethereum | Confirmed |
| DOT and Parity equity | Founder economics exist; complete quantity, sales, and current value are unknown | Unknown |
| Web3 Foundation treasury | Foundation assets cannot be counted as personal net worth | Confirmed |
Key-claim evidence ledger
| Claim | Reviewed finding | Grade | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereum co-founder | Confirmed by Ethereum's official history and first-client record | A | Ethereum history |
| Authored the Yellow Paper | Confirmed by authorship and historical records | A | Yellow Paper |
| Owns or controls Ethereum | Incorrect; contributor status does not create network ownership | A | Ethereum governance material |
| Returned as Parity CEO in 2025 and shifted to technical delivery in 2026 | His July 29, 2026 blog confirms the role change and does not disclose equity or token balances | A | Parity blog |
Priority open questions
- What are his historical allocations and current balances of ETH, DOT, KSM, and other tokens?
- What are his equity, Foundation relationships, and compensation across Parity-related entities?
Revision 1.1: Added Wood's July 29, 2026 note on returning as Parity CEO, leading technical delivery, and Pierre Aubert's departure. (2026-09-30)
Technical formation and Ethereum
Section titled “Technical formation and Ethereum”Wood trained in computing and completed doctoral work before joining Ethereum’s early team. He formalized the protocol in the Yellow Paper, implemented the C++ client, and served as the Ethereum Foundation’s first chief technology officer. These contributions make “co-founder” accurate while also showing that Ethereum was a multi-founder project. Ethereum history Yellow Paper
Parity, Web3 Foundation, and Polkadot
Section titled “Parity, Web3 Foundation, and Polkadot”After Ethereum, Wood co-founded Ethcore, renamed Parity Technologies, and proposed Polkadot. Web3 Foundation commissioned and stewards parts of the ecosystem. His wealth path plausibly includes founder interests, compensation, and token exposure across these ventures, but no complete public cap table or wallet-and-liability schedule establishes a precise net worth. On July 29, 2026, Wood posted on Parity’s site about his current role. He wrote that he stepped back from running Parity in 2022 to focus on protocol and architecture work, returned as CEO in 2025 once that architecture was set, and now intends to lead technical delivery directly. Pierre Aubert, vice president of engineering for almost three years, is leaving at the same time. The note is a first-party statement of job duties. It does not disclose equity, compensation, or token balances. Parity: A Note from Gavin Wood
Assessment
Section titled “Assessment”Wood’s protocol authorship and co-founder status are primary-source supported. Personal allocations, realized sales, taxes, and present ownership remain only partially observable.
