Litecoin
Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency created by Charlie Lee from Bitcoin’s open-source code. Lee announced it on October 9, 2011, published source and binaries before launch, and released the genesis parameters for public mining on October 13, 2011.
Design and launch
Section titled “Design and launch”The original announcement described Litecoin as “silver to Bitcoin’s gold.” It retained Bitcoin’s capped proof-of-work monetary model while changing several parameters: Scrypt proof of work, roughly 2.5-minute blocks, halvings every 840,000 blocks, and an eventual supply near 84 million LTC. The post disclosed 150 premined coins corresponding to the genesis block and two confirmation blocks, released source and binaries three days before launch, and let forum participants vote on launch time. This supports a transparent public-launch description, not a claim that every participant had identical information, hardware, or mining access. Original launch announcement
Litecoin is derived from Bitcoin rather than an independently invented ledger architecture. Its historical significance lies in producing an enduring network from a deliberately modified Bitcoin codebase, not in inventing proof of work or the blockchain.
Development milestones
Section titled “Development milestones”- Litecoin activated Segregated Witness in 2017 before Bitcoin, providing a live economic network for the upgrade.
- Dogecoin adopted auxiliary proof of work with Litecoin, allowing miners to secure both networks through merged mining.
- Mimblewimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) activated in May 2022 as an opt-in extension for confidential amounts and improved fungibility; David Burkett led implementation with community and foundation funding. MWEB activation
These changes were not Charlie Lee’s work alone. Litecoin Core contributors, miners, node operators, exchanges, wallet developers, and users determine whether code is written, signaled, deployed, and economically adopted.
Covered people
Section titled “Covered people”- Charlie Lee: creator of Litecoin’s initial implementation and launch, later a public advocate and director of the Litecoin Foundation.
Governance distinction
Section titled “Governance distinction”Litecoin has no chief executive or corporate owner. The Litecoin Foundation is a nonprofit that funds development, education, partnerships, and adoption, but it does not own the network. Charlie Lee remains unusually influential because he is an identified creator and public spokesperson; miners and independently operated nodes still choose which consensus rules to run.
The accurate distinction is: Lee created and launched Litecoin and can influence its direction, but he cannot unilaterally own balances, reverse valid transactions, or compel the decentralized network to adopt software.
